Spotlights

https://www.undertheradar.co.nz/gig/91070/Spotlights-Ipecac-Records-NZ-Tour.utr

Fresh from extensive tours throughout America and Europe with fellow Ipecac Records bands the Melvins and Mr Bungle. New York doom gazers Spotlights commence on their first ever tour of New Zealand this November. Bringing a sound that moves between beautiful atmospherics to brutal heaviness, mending melody over menace and sanity battling insanity. Kiwi audiences can expect to see a band at the peak of their sound and genre on the back of last years critically acclaimed album Alchemy For The Dead, helping to establish them as a world wide presence and a must see/tell your friends band.

If you don’t know who Spotlights are, or haven’t heard their name, then you haven’t been paying attention. However, all is not lost New Zealand as now is your chance to discover what will soon be your favourite band. Formed by husband and wife Mario (guitar, vocals, keys) and Sarah Quintero (bass, vocals) and Chris Enriquez (Drums) in 2009, they have since plugged away on tour after tour, recording after recording, earning every fan they have, whether it’s Chino Moreno, Mike Patton, or the bartender at a local club. During 2016, the group gained traction with their debut album, Tidals, earning coveted spots on tours with Deftones (we did say Chino is a fan), and Refused. Not long after, they caught the attention of Mike Pattons record label - Ipecac Recordings, releasing Seismic in 2017, touring relentlessly (again, enjoying word of mouth amongst musicians to land outings with the Mr. Bungle, Quicksand, Melvins, Pallbearer, etc) and worked right into the studio, releasing Love & Decay in 2019. Consequence praised their “unique amalgam of sounds that is both heavy and heavenly,” Brooklyn Vegan said the band balances the pretty with metallic sludge, and Invisible Oranges said the album “leans on the ambient and krautrock inspired edges of post-metal.” In the wake of their 2020 EP We Are All Atomic, Kerrang! observed, “That a band as heavy and romantic as Spotlights have become a fixture in the rock scene Is impressive; that they’ve done so in such a short period of time is tremendous.”

Spotlights occupy the space between a push-and-pull of jarring metallic catharsis and sweeping distortion. Even as either side vies for supremacy, neither extreme ever completely tightens its grip, allowing waves of melodic vocals and expressive sonic sorcery to breathe in the middle. Allow yourselves to be swept up under this sound this November.

Spotlights will be joined on all shows by Threat.Meet.Protocol and King Fish.

Paul Ubana Jones

TICKETS: https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2024/paul-ubana-jones2/whitianga?

After a captivating sold out show in March, Paul Ubana Jones returns to wow Whitianga and the wider Coromandel.
Paul Ubana Jones is a genuine World Music artist and showcases his music to stunning effect in art galleries/concert halls/night clubs and ‘world festivals'. An Acoustic Guitar Sensation, Paul has toured with the best: Norah Jones, Crowded House, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo Tuck and Patti and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Born and raised in Britain to a Nigerian father and a Yorkshire mother. He speaks with a London accent. Caught the explosive Sixties scene when the centre of music resided there. Saw Hendrix and the others as a teen. He gained a musical scholarship and his studies included classical music, along with his playing of guitar and cello.

Crucially, he would have been in the vicinity of other innovative touchstone guitar virtuosos. Richard Thompson, Peter Green, Davey Graham, and Jimmy Page in his folkie jacket. This informs his multi-personality guitar style.
Before becoming a resident of New Zealand, he was a resident of Switzerland by marriage. Performed extensively in both Canadian and USA festivals. He has also been awarded since arriving and becoming an NZ citizen: 3 major music awards (including a Tui Award) and has to date released 9 albums.

Don’t miss this unique musician! Get your tickets early. Doors at 7pm (happy hour from then), show from 8pm.

The Nukes: Together Again

TICKETS: https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2024/the-nukes-together-again-in-concert/whitianga

The Nukes: Together Again {the original 3 plus JayP}

Catch them once more as they re-unite for a concert at the Monkey House, Whitianga, on Saturday 7th December 7.30pm.

The back story:

Way back yonder in 2008 three fully grown men banded together and embarked upon a perilous musical journey with no particular destination.

Their mission? To write and perform original music using only the humble ukulele.

Thus, The Nukes were born and quickly they grew into a bonny wee thing, gaining a reputation across Australasia for boisterous live shows and impressive original material.

Riddled with optimism and fuelled by beer and bonhomie, David ‘Fingers of fire’ Parker, Ben ‘Country boy’ Collier and Dave ‘Snapper’ Thiele set the burgeoning parochial ukulele/folk scene on fire for a full, glorious decade.

And then..

Rumours swirled, accusations were levelled..

Was Snapper doing a solo album? How many wives did Ben actually have? And was David really involved in the Church of constant sorrow?

Unfortunately nothing quite so scandalous had occurred, basically Snapper got tired and wanted to lie down for a bit.

So he did.

The Nukes trotted on, first with curious percussionist Mike Burrows, then (and still) with flexible young Parker prodigy Jay P.

But the question has always lingered, like a dog outside a butcher’s shop.. would the original three ever reunite?

Yes. The answer is yes.

You can catch them once more as they re-unite for a concert at the Monkey House, Whitianga, on Saturday 7th December 7.30pm.

WALKING SONGS - A STORY OF SONGS FROM TE ARAROA
On Tour Sept/Oct 2024 NZ/AU

Join ‘seemingly unstoppable force of nature’ Milly Moon in an intimate performance of story and song, inspirited by a solo journey on Te Araroa.

This unique re-telling of 5 months walking the ‘world’s toughest through-hike’ celebrates the power of the voice, the body, and being shit scared but doing it anyway! The debut performance earning Melbourne Fringe Festival’s Best Music award 2023.

A vocalist known for remarkable range and diversity, Moon’s joyful veneration for unadorned song is captivating. Her original music, rich storytelling and seamless weaving of prose, inspiring rare and darkly explosive performances.

Run Time: approx 60 minutes
